Uncover the secrets to a great looking party dress! Part One

Can you believe it? It’s that time of year again. The sound of sleigh bells are coming around the corner, it’s nearly time to pucker up for a kiss under the mistletoe and we’re all starting to get in a tangle trying to wrap those pretty ribbon bows around the presents! All of this can only mean one thing….party dress season has officially arrived!

Whether you’re planning on treating yourself to a shiny new outfit, or you’re dusting off your trusty favourite, there is only one secret you need to know to ensure your dress is looking its best…

Underwear!

Yes you read that correctly, it’s all about the underwear. Get the foundation right and everything else will fall into place. It really is that easy.

The only thing you need to know, is make sure your bra fits!

Not only will it drastically change the overall shape it’ll give you, but do you know what? It’s actually a lot more comfortable (perfect for getting a little Christmas boogie on!) and helps improve breast health.

Our top three tips to ensure you’re wearing a well fitted bra:

1. THE BAND

  • The band should be fitted nice and snug running parallel to the bottom of the cups. If the band is riding up your back, or you can pull it a good couple of inches away from your body, then the band is too big, which means losing 80% of the support of the bra. Try going down a size or 2 and see how that fits. But remember, for every band size you go down, go up 1 size in the cup! (See our post about sister sizing)

2. THE CUPS

  • The Cups! What you are looking for is that the centre gore of the bra sits flat against your body and the top edge of the cup is sitting smoothly over your breasts. To check that the wires are not pressing on the edge of your breast tissue (just under your arm) simply pop your arm out to the side, pull away the side of the cups and check that the wires are sitting behind the start of your breast tissue (you may need to use a mirror to help, you ask a trusted friend of partner).
    • The most obvious sign that your cups are too small is that dreaded 4 boob look! (We’ve all been there haven’t we?) You’ll notice this if you find that your breasts spill out over the top, from the sides, or that the top edge of the bra is beginning to cut into the skin. Other signs to look out for include, the centre gore sitting away from your body, and the uncomfortable feeling of wires digging into you (no Christmas boogieing for you!)
    • Alternatively, if the cups are too big, then you will notice quite a gap between the bra and your breast, or an excess of fabric. If, like most of us, you have 1 boob slightly bigger than the other, then we always recommend fitting to the fuller side to ensure the best support.

3. THE STRAPS

  • The straps offer 10% each of the support in your bra, so check they are sitting correctly by popping your fingers in under the straps and lift them up off your shoulders. A well-adjusted strap should lift no more than about 2 inches. If you can stretch them up over your ears, you might want to tighten them a little.

We always recommend dropping in-store and getting professionally fitted by one of our trained fitters, but if you don’t happen to live nearby then we’ve always got our carefully crafted Bra Size Calculator on our website for you to try!

Stay tuned for part two next week, where we’ll be offering our tops tips on lingerie styles to best suit your outfits this year!

Meet The Panache ‘Role Models’: Mica Paris

Just over a month ago Panache launched their new campaign, ‘Modelled by Role Models’. It shares the awe-inspiring stories of a group of women who have achieved incredible things in their lives. So far we have shared with you the successes of Hannah and Martyna.

Today we…

Meet: MICA PARIS

British singer and presenter, Mica Paris, grew up in her grandparent’s church before becoming a backup singer at the young age of 17. In the early 1990’s she released her platinum selling album ‘Contribution’, and went on to releasing 2 other albums, and taking part in West End shows ‘Mama I Want To Sing’ and ‘Sweet Lorraine’.

Although she remained behind her microphone, in 2002 Mica tried her hand in presenting and hosted the TV programme ‘Soul Solutions’ before writing her book called ‘Beautiful Within: Finding happiness and confidence in your own skin’.

Mica Paris is a patron of many charities including the Space for Music Foundation and the Amy Winehouse Foundation, along with supporting the ‘No Means No’ campaign, which fights against inequality and abuse towards women.

WHAT MAKES A STRONG ROLE MODEL IS SOMEONE WHO’S NOT THINKING ABOUT BEING A ROLE MODEL. SOMEONE WHO IS PASSIONATE ABOUT WHAT THEY DO AND IS DRIVEN TO ACHIEVE GREATNESS. IT’S ABOUT LEAVING SOMETHING FABULOUS FOR THE WORLD TO ENJOY, EVEN WHEN YOU’RE NOT HERE ANYMORE. Mica Paris, Singer and Charity Campaigner

Meet the Panache ‘Role Models’: Martyna Kaczmarek

Last time on the blog we introduced you to the amazing Hannah Cockroft – if you happened to have missed it, you can catch up here.

Today, we want to share with you the beautifully selfless story of Martyna.

Meet: MARTYNA KACZMAREK

The ‘Day in the Life’ campaign was launched after Martyna Kaczmarek decided to donate blood on her 18th birthday at a regional blood centre in Poland. Martyna used her own personal experience of donating blood and initiated the idea of organising blood drives at her own school. The first blood drive was a huge success and the ‘Day in the Life’ campaign was born; now a registered charity hosting blood drives in schools and sports stadiums across Poland.

Martyna is credited with motivating countless young people and adults alike to consider the idea of donation, with her ‘Day For Life’ campaign having expanded to several major cities across Poland. There’s no better role model than an individual dedicating their time, efforts and talents to an important cause that will save thousands of lives every year.

I THINK WHAT MAKES A STRONG ROLE MODEL IS CREATIVITY, INDIVIDUALITY AND THE ABILITY TO OVERCOME OBSTACLES. I FEEL HONOURED AND PROUD THAT I’M CONSIDERED TO BE A FEMALE ROLE MODEL. Martyna Kaczmarek, Campaigner

Meet the Panache ‘Role Models’: Hannah Cockroft

Last Tuesday Mish was lucky enough to have attended the launch of the Panache campaign ‘Modelled by Role Models‘ at the BAFTA in London, it was a great night, and a truly inspirational campaign.

Modelled by Role Models celebrates six female role models – each chosen for their individual strengths, achievements and contributions to society, as well as their healthy approach to body image. In an industry so focused on physical attributes, Panache felt compelled to champion the next generation of role models.

All the ladies modeling in the campaign are beautiful, but they are also, so much more. Every single one of them has completed outstanding achievements, often showing great selflessness and drive to help others.

We want to share their stories with you.

Meet: HANNAH COCKROFT

Hannah Cockroft MBE, is on the Great Britain Paralympic development team. Born in July 1992, Hannah suffered 2 cardiac arrests, which resulted in damage to 2 areas of her brain and left her with deformity to her legs and feet and weakened hips.

Not letting this dampen her spirits Hannah started her sporting career on both the paralympic basketball and discus teams before moving on to solely concentrate on wheelchair racing in her early teens.

In 2010 Hannah broke her first world record in the T34 400m and now holds the world records at T34 100m, 200m, 400m and 800m. In June 2010 she broke 7 world records in 8 days, at the same time as becoming ‘Prom Queen’, completing her A-Level exams and competing in her first ever-International overseas competition.

In 2011 Hannah was nominated for the IPC World Athletics Championships, held in New Zealand. Her senior debut on the Great Britain team saw her bring home 2 Gold medal thus causing fans to call her Hurricane Hannah. She went on to be awarded an MBE for services to athletics in 2013 and winning the IPC Euorpean Champion T34 100 Gold & T34 800 Gold in 2014.

“THE ADVICE THAT I’D GIVE TO ANYONE WHO WANTED TO FOLLOW WHAT I DO IS GRAB EVERY OPPORTUNITY THAT THEY’RE GIVEN. DON’T BE SCARED – GO OUT, GRAB IT AND ENJOY IT!” Hannah Cockroft, Paralympian

Last Friday marked the end of our amazing giveaway, where one (very) lucky lady won herself a year’s supply of undies! We had an unbelievable number of entries, so thank you ever so much for taking the time to enter. We really appreciate it.

KATIE GOULET

Katie has an amazing fashion & lifestyle blog, so if you’re looking for something good to read, check it out: Toodaloo Katie

We’ve been in touch with Katie and here’s what she had to say about being our winner:

“I am so excited to have won a year’s supply of lingerie – I can hardly believe it! I will admit that I often forget to treat myself to new and gorgeous lingerie, so my underwear drawer is in need of a revamp and this will do just the trick. I can’t wait to try everything on!”

Here at Mish, we’re firm believers in treating ourselves (perhaps a little too much, shh don’t tell any one about all the chocolates in the office!). Whatever your treat may be, just remember that you deserve it!

And don’t worry if you didn’t win this time around, we have something else special launching next week…KEEP A LOOKOUT!

Treat Mum to a Luxury Bra Fitting Experience

Mum. She is your best friend. She knows you inside out. She’s celebrated your highs in life (no matter how big or small), and she’s experienced your lows. And yes, she may drive you made sometimes (let’s face it, whose mother doesn’t) and she may not always have the answer to life, but at the end of the day, there is nothing a mum’s hug cannot fix…at least for that split second.

So let’s make mum feel extra special this Mother’s Day.

With less than a week to go until Mothering Sunday (15th), we’ve put together some quick, but albeit lovely ideas to inspire you.

Treat her to a Luxury Fitting Experience

Here at Mish, you can book mum an experience. An experience that will leave her feeling pampered, indulged and beautiful.

Our Luxury Bra Fitting will begin with a style consultation over a sparkling glass of bubbly, so we can really get to know mum, and understand exactly what she likes, and more importantly, what she needs.

The consultation will be followed by a fitting with one of our professionally trained bra fitters, and as Cornwall’s leading fitting specialists, you can rest assured that mum will leave feeling satisfied, confident and utterly amazing.

To finish it all off, mum will also receive £25 off the lingerie set of her choice, as well as a goodie bag filled with treats, so the experience can continue at home.

Want help to #FreeTheSqueeze ?- Say goodbye to bad fitting bras!

Freethesqueeze

Happy belated 2015! – It’s been a great start to the year so far, and it’s about to get even better with the launch of our new campaign, #FreeTheSqueeze

But first…Let me ask you this: Would you put your feet in shoes 2 sizes too small? No? That would be silly right?! So why do it to your boobs?

Think about how uncomfortable it is when you’ve squished your feet into a pair of shoes, that don’t fit (no matter how gorgeous they are!). It hurts. Prohibits your movement. It might even cause you physical damage!

Well…The same applies to your boobs.

#FreeTheSqueeze was born, because I value empowering the women I meet every day. I want you to know, that bras don’t need to be uncomfortable. It is possible for a bra to be pretty, fashionable, comfortable and supportive all at the same time, we really can have it all!

#FreeTheSqueeze is about spreading that positive message, so you, and your boobs can enjoy the realisation that a better more comfortable fit, might not actually be that hard to find!

Over the coming weeks, I’ll be releasing my top tips for finding that perfectly fitting bra (and how to spot a badly fitting one!) right here on the blog, Facebook and Twitter – If you want to keep up to date, you know what to do!

And to celebrate the launch of #FreeTheSqueeze, we’re offering 1 very lucky lady the chance to win a year’s supply of Freya, Fantasie and Elomi lingerie – I know, you love us 😉
